ALCAN TO CONSOLIDATE HEAD OFFICE IN MONTREAL THROUGH THREE-YEAR MODERNIZATION OF ‘MAISON ALCAN’ CAMPUS
1/15/2007
PURCHASE OF ADJACENT FACILITIES KEY ELEMENT OF PLAN
PROJECT UNDERSCORES COMMITMENT TO MONTREAL HOME
Montreal, Canada – January 15, 2007 – Alcan will consolidate its Head Office operations in downtown Montreal, Quebec, through the renovation of the Company’s existing ‘Maison Alcan’ headquarters and the purchase and modernization of the adjacent Salvation Army facilities. The approximate three-year project will create a more effective and efficient working environment by eliminating temporary third-party leases, implementing improved technology, energy efficiency, standardization, and improved processes. Currently, more than 800 people in Montreal support the Company’s corporate, Bauxite & Alumina, and Primary Metal Group operations at its Head Office location.
“Alcan’s plan to consolidate its global headquarters, in a cost-effective manner, into a more modern, efficient campus, recognizes the Company’s growth over the past five years and allows flexibility for future growth,” said Dick Evans, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alcan Inc. at a press conference today. “It reaffirms the long-standing partnership Alcan has historically enjoyed with Montreal, the Company’s home for more than 80 years,” he added.
The event was attended by Quebec Premier Jean Charest; Raymond Bachand, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade for Quebec; Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services for Canada and Minister responsible for the Montreal region; Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay; Colonel Glen Shepherd, Chief Secretary of The Salvation Army, Canada and Bermudas; Lieutenant-Colonel Gilbert St.-Onge, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Quebec; retired Alcan Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, David Culver, who commissioned the construction of Maison Alcan in 1981; and employees.
“We are extremely pleased that a major company like Alcan, which has been operating out of Montreal for many years and has an international reputation, will continue to play such a major role in ensuring the dynamism of our city. This also reinforces our desire to continue our efforts to ensure Montreal can develop to its full capacity in terms of being a world leader in innovation,” said Mayor Tremblay.
Following The Salvation Army’s recent decision to refocus its mission in Montreal, it approached Alcan with the proposal to sell its sanctuary and administrative tower at Stanley and Drummond Streets. Alcan built the tower with The Salvation Army during the Company’s construction of Maison Alcan. The Company has purchased these assets, and will continue its longstanding relationship with The Salvation Army.
Modernization work on the almost 300,000 square feet of the combined sites is scheduled to begin in early 2007 and expected to be completed by the end of 2009. The Company has estimated that it will invest between US$40-50 million over the next three years, to acquire, develop, and renovate the combined Maison Alcan campus.
“The decision to expand and modernize our existing home made sense logistically and financially, although other alternatives were taken into consideration, including the relocation of Alcan’s Head Office to another location in the Montreal area,” added Mr. Evans.
The Company also plans to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the new site, which would be one of the first of its kind in Montreal.
“Once completed, the new ‘Maison Alcan’ will truly stand as a sustainability benchmark through its leading energy and environmental design and the historical preservation of the site. It will promote Alcan’s position as an employer of choice by reinforcing the qualities that Alcan has come to be known for all over the world: leading-edge technology; concern for the environment, our communities and our people; and a driving force of innovation,” said Gilles Frenette, ‘Maison Alcan Transformation’ Project Manager.
