Alcan and Montréal 2005 Unveil Medals for FINA WORLD AQUATIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Montreal, Canada  7/6/2005

Alcan Inc. (NYSE, TSX: AL) and MONTRÉAL 2005 today unveiled the winners' medals for the XI FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – MONTRÉAL 2005, to be hosted on the city's île Sainte-Hélène between July 16-31, 2005. The medals were crafted from aluminum supplied exclusively by Alcan's Shawinigan smelter.

Speaking at a press conference today, Daniel Gagnier, Alcan's Senior Vice President, Corporate and External Affairs, said, "Alcan, a company committed to sustainability, is proud to partner with the MONTRÉAL 2005 Championships through these impressive winners' medals. Our commitment to Quebec athletes is exemplified through our sponsorship of Chantal Petitclerc, a world record holder and five-time Paralympics gold medal winner. If anyone understands a medal's true merit, it is surely Chantal."

"Winning a medal in any competition is an exhilarating experience, and these medals are a true tribute to every athlete's hard work and determination. I wish all of the athletes at these Championships the best of luck and look forward to seeing them awarded these beautiful works of art," said Chantal Petitclerc.

Mr. Gagnier was accompanied by Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay, René Guimond, Executive Vice President and COO of MONTRÉAL 2005, and Chantal Petitclerc, one of the world's premier wheelchair track athletes and Canada's most decorated Paralympians.

The medals were designed by Jean-Philippe Caron and combine aluminum and glass in a design that reflects the significance of water as a planetary resource - a key element in forging aluminum, one of the world's only infinitely recyclable materials. In total, Alcan supplied aluminum for 750 individual medals and 6 team competition trophies.
