Alcan Industry Leader in 2004 for Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Montreal, Canada  10/6/2004

2004 marks another successful year in Alcan's (NYSE, TSX: AL) sustainability progress. For the fourth time in five years, the Company has been selected as a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World).

"There is no doubt in my mind that sustainability makes good business sense and our business progress this year demonstrates the point," said Travis Engen, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Sustainability drives us to become a better investment, a better employer, a better neighbour, and a better company - creating value today and preserving it for tomorrow. By engraining sustainability into every component of Alcan's Integrated Management System (AIMS) and as an integral element of on-going initiatives, we are championing and leading the industry in our commitment to sustainability."

The Index recognized Alcan as leading the aluminum industry in criteria ranging from codes of conduct, risk and crisis management, environmental policy and management, human capital development, and standards for suppliers. In addition, Alcan's high ranking in the Index is a testament to how well the company has set industry best practices in managing climate change issues, such as the development of Alcan's CO2-inventory and Alcan's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) strategy.

As a further demonstration of its commitment, Alcan also joined the United Nation's Global Compact - a voluntary international initiative for businesses, promoting the development of a more sustainable and inclusive global economy.

Earlier this year, Alcan was ranked as the "World's Most Admired Company" in the international metals industry category and was one of the top companies in the overall ranking by Fortune magazine's global corporate reputation survey.

Alcan is a multinational, market-driven company and a global leader in aluminum and packaging, as well as aluminum recycling. With world-class operations in primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum as well as flexible and specialty packaging, aerospace applications, bauxite mining and alumina processing, today's Alcan is even better positioned to meet and exceed its customers' needs for innovative solutions and service. Alcan employs 88,000 people and has operating facilities in 63 countries.
